Operation Chubby Buns

I believe I briefly mentioned somewhere that Jonas hadn't gained any weight since gaining 3 pounds in a week when we brought him home. While the doctor seemed nonchalant about this issue face to face he proceeded to mark my boy as failure to thrive in his medical records. This will not do, friends! Oh, this will not do at all!!! Operation Chubby Buns has begun and will be in effect until my son packs on some pounds. I want to be able to count the rings on his arms and thighs, I want his gut spilling over the top of his diaper, and his chin to touch his collar bone if you know what I mean. hahahaha

We've been giving Jonas as much food as his little body can stand (which is a remarkably large amount) without him becoming over stuffed. The average daily amount of Whole Milk our pediatrician recommends kids Jonas' age have is 20 oz. We're giving Jonas 24oz AND we're giving him a pediatric nutritional drink daily as well. I already notice a new fullness in his cheeks. Unfortunately, though, Jonas has a stomach bug today. He's had multiple diaper blowouts and his appetite is decreased. I hope this doesn't throw the progress we've been making toward chubby buns off track. I'll keep you updated.

Ohhh I'm so sorry operation chubby buns is on hold. Zoie has the same thing. She's lost almost 3 lbs :( Noooo worries, when he feels better I have the perfect solution to gain chubby buns (sadly, my buns are a little fluffier, too:)
Starbucks Pumpkin Loaf!!! Thats all you need to add. LOL
Zoie loves them & pounds down the entire loaf on her own. I have to fight her for a few crumbs.
This will give his buns lots of chubby!! :)
Good luck!!

FTT is is difficult diagnosis to deal with.

FTT may not be solved with simply more food intake. Many times these children are reacting to something in their environment and no matter how much food you put in front of them, they will not be able to grow and develop appropriately.

The best solution (especially if the child is vomiting, has diarrhea, or is refusing to eat) is to find out what the child is reacting to and get that out of the child's environment.

PS: I have added your blog to the link list in our private Failure To Thrive Social Network

Dr Bailey, Thank you for diecting me to te FTT Social Network. I intend to ask more detailed questions of our doctor at our next visit in 2 weeks as the only way I found out the doc made that diagnosis was by reviewing the medical recrods myself. He did not speak to me about it at all or even tell me he was diagnosing my child as such.

Is it fair to classify a child as FTT after only ONE month of failing to gain weight? Especially in light of all the stresses of being internationally adopted AND the fact that Ethiopian born children should not be compared to US growth charts?

Jen, Aidan had failure to thrive when he was about 8 or so months old. We were instructed to add a bunch of fat to his diet--we added things like oil and butter to his food. He was also on Prevacid. Hope that helps! Praying for you all!

I saw Dustin this morning and heard about what was going on with Jonas. I haven't been on my computer in a few days so I had no idea. I will be praying that Jonas will put on some of the extra weight needed to "thrive" as the docs call it!

Jen- We had to add lots and lots of fat (cream instead of milk in oatmeal) and Protien powder to Igor's food to help him bulk up when he arrived home.
Keep us posted on the tummy troubles! I hope Jonas is feeling much better.

Jen,
Ella also was a failure to thrive kid when we brought her home. She gagged on everything, refused to eat, etc. It's so disheartening to watch that happen. She would drink though--I mixed (per doc's orders) half and half with pediasure breakfast mix. Made her grilled cheese sandwiches dipped in egg (I would have gagged on that, sick), she did some smoothies, too. We finally got her to plump up, but food has always been an issue. I hope he's feeling better and back on track with weight gain :)
